The first settlement in Virginia, at Jamestown, was undertaken in 1607 by the Virginia Company of London. (Thus, like New Amsterdam and Massachusetts Bay Company, Virginia began life as a business operation.) The company was reorganised and rechartered in 1618, but in 1624 the charter was revoked, and Virginia became a royal colony for the remainder of the colonial period.
The county system in Virginia was not created all at once but grew in a series of stages from about 1618 to 1642. The Virginia Company in 1618 ordered the organisation of the colony into four jurisdictions known as cities or boroughs. Based on this beginning, various courts were established, which formed the basis for the full-blown counties.
By the end of this period, nine counties existed from which all other Virginia counties were descended: Charles City, Elizabeth City, Henrico, Isle of Wight, James City, Northampton, Northumberland, Warwick and York.
Middlesex County was founded in 1673. English settlement of the county began around 1640, with the county being officially formed in 1669 from a part of Lancaster County. Middlesex County is located in Virginia's Middle Peninsula region, on the eastern end. It is bordered by the Rappahannock River, the Chesapeake Bay, the Piankatank River and the Dragon Run swamp. The county's only incorporated town, Urbanna, was established by the colonial Assembly in 1680 as one of 20, 50-acre port towns designated for trade. It served initially as a port on the Rappahannock River for shipping agricultural products, especially the tobacco commodity crop. As the county developed, it became its commercial and governmental center.
Essex County was established in 1692. The original county was Northumberland County, established in 1645, and subsequently divided into Nothumberland,, Lancaster, and Westmoreland Counties. Eventually Lancaster became Lancaster, Rappahannock and Middlesex Counties. In 1692, the now extict Rappahannock County split into Essex and Richmond Counties. The port town of Tappahannock was to become a center of commerce during the 17th and 18th centuries establishing a crossroads.
Arnold H Hord states that the lineage of the Hord family of England has been traced back to Richard Hord of Shropshire 1275 A.D. And in 1553, Alan Hord, a member of this Shropshire family purchased the Manor of Cote, Oxfordshire. Other members of this family moved to London, to Ewell in Surrey and to the southern and southwestern counties of England. He states that May 22, 1650 Aalan Hoord came to Virginia, also Elias Hoard May 27, 1654 and that all people with the Hord surname in America are descended form this family, who has the right to bear a Coat of Arms
I find it quite amusing when you see other people's web sites concerning the Hord family, with the Coat of Arms in a prominent position, and they have copied word for word from these publications.
Unfortunately some of his work does seem to be flawed.
Other yDNA matches with the HORD/HORE surname are MONROE, you can find research for the Monroe research
Since having a yDNA match with some descendents of John Hord we have been looking very closely to see if we can find the answer to this. My Hore family can be traced back to the early 1500's in villages to the north of Gloucester City. These villages were Charlton Kings, Leckhampton, Down Hatherley and Deerhurst. Although there are records earlier in 1327 of Hugh le Hore paying 9d in tax at Charlton Kings.
The Hore/le Hore/Hoore/Hoare/Hoar/Whore surname has never been spelt Hord.
Also you would expect a family who had a Coat of Arms to be quite well educated and usually had an Armorial Seal to sign their documents with. In the 1708 deed of William Gardner John HORE couldn't sign his name.
So what do we really know about John Hord. In the following early documents he spelt his name HOARE/HORE then for some reason he started using HORD/HOARD

1734 "Shady Grove" is situated near the present border line of the Counties of Caroline and Essex. The house is now situated in Caroline County, but in 1717 that part of Caroline County was within the boundaries of the County of Essex. In an indenture between Thomas Coghill of St. Ann's Parish, Essex County, and Thomas Dickinson of Hanover Parish, King George County (May 20, 1734), the land sold is described as "part of a patent to James Coghill, April 17, 1667, situated on a branch of Portobago Bay, called the deep branch, thence up the sd branch to the line of John HORD" (Deed Book, 1733-34, p. 84, Essex Co.)..

Mr HOARD (Thomas) - this gentleman left the army at the close of the war with the Rank of Captain - he was in BUFORDS defeat - and I have understood that many of the officers should Say had he commanded; the Tables would have been turned on TARLTON - who contrary to all good faith - so soon as the men had laid down there arms on certain stipulated Conditions, he let his horse loose on them; and began his usual masacre - when this gentleman with hia Company alone, flew to there arms - and fought most gallantly - until overpowered, he Taken prissoner, and covered with wounds the marks of which he carries now in his face.
This gentleman lived near me for three years - he is a man of good Sense, very independant in His property, possesses a fine Temper - and I think a respectable man - and altho I cannot Say any thing within my Knowledge, of his millitary Talents - yet certain I am - from his Activity, and Industry - and being well aquainted with Bussiness - that he would be a valluable acquisition in the Staff department - he holds I think the rank of majr in the 80,000 Malitia, that has been drafted as the first requisitiond and he assures me his determination is, to end his days in the Army. if he can get an appointment - and to render his country every Service in his power.

The letter of 2 May to McHenry from Gen. Thomas Posey (1750–1818), who lived in Kentucky but wrote from Fredericksburg, Va., reads:
:“I take the liberty of recommending Majr Thomas HORD of Caroline county to your notice in the appointments to be made for officering the provisional Army. I observe by the papers that the President has thought it necessary to organize the provisional Regiments—Should this be the case you may rely in full confidance with respect to the virtue patriotism and abillities of Majr Thomas HORD. He was a valuable Officer in our late revolution—was very much wounded and cut to pieces in Bufords defeat—is a warm friend to our Genl Government—is a steady Opposer of John TAYLOR to whome he is a neighbour—and is independant in his circumstances. Majr HORD did not solicit me to write to you for an appointment, but from my knowledge of the man I think he will be a great acquisition to the Army agreeable to the rank he may hold. I asked him if he would accept of a commission in the provisional army, he said if his country needed his services—that is if his country was in danger of an insurection or invasion he was ready and willing to serve in the rank of a field officer should the President think proper to confer such an appointment upon. I think his rank at the end of the war was a captain”
Thomas Hord served as an officer in the Virginia forces during the Revolution and had risen to the rank of captain lieutenant in the 6th Virginia Regiment when in May 1780 he was wounded and taken prisoner in Charleston, South Carolina.

1802 James HORD Prince William - Haymarket was the district courthouse for Fairfax, Loudoun, Fauquier, and Prince William Counties. Today it is Saint Paul's Episcopal Church, but it remains obvious that the building, with its three-bay arcade now filled in with pressed brick and its circular fan or window in the gable, was once almost identical to the Faifax Courthouse. Largely for that reason the design is attributed to James WREN. Although builders James WRIGHT and James HORD had completed the Prince William - Haymarket building by September 1802, there was a delay of over a year before the court met there. Virginia - Jurisdictional History
The first settlement in Virginia, at Jamestown, was undertaken in 1607 by the Virginia Company of London. (Thus, like New Amsterdam and Massachusetts Bay Company, Virginia began life as a business operation.) The company was reorganised and rechartered in 1618, but in 1624 the charter was revoked, and Virginia became a royal colony for the remainder of the colonial period.
The county system in Virginia was not created all at once but grew in a series of stages from about 1618 to 1642. The Virginia Company in 1618 ordered the organisation of the colony into four jurisdictions known as cities or boroughs. Based on this beginning, various courts were established, which formed the basis for the full-blown counties.
By the end of this period, nine counties existed from which all other Virginia counties were descended: Charles City, Elizabeth City, Henrico, Isle of Wight, James City, Northampton, Northumberland, Warwick and York.
Middlesex County was founded in 1673. English settlement of the county began around 1640, with the county being officially formed in 1669 from a part of Lancaster County. Middlesex County is located in Virginia's Middle Peninsula region, on the eastern end. It is bordered by the Rappahannock River, the Chesapeake Bay, the Piankatank River and the Dragon Run swamp. The county's only incorporated town, Urbanna, was established by the colonial Assembly in 1680 as one of 20, 50-acre port towns designated for trade. It served initially as a port on the Rappahannock River for shipping agricultural products, especially the tobacco commodity crop. As the county developed, it became its commercial and governmental center.
Essex County was established in 1692. The original county was Northumberland County, established in 1645, and subsequently divided into Nothumberland,, Lancaster, and Westmoreland Counties. Eventually Lancaster became Lancaster, Rappahannock and Middlesex Counties. In 1692, the now extict Rappahannock County split into Essex and Richmond Counties. The port town of Tappahannock was to become a center of commerce during the 17th and 18th centuries establishing a crossroads.
John Hord of Shady Grove, Essex County, Virginia
Both the publications, A History of the Hord family by Robert Hord, and The Hord family of Virginia by the Reverand Arnold Harris Hord a complete history of the Hord family, are based on an original manuscript book owned by Henry Ewell Hord of Nashville, Tennessee.Arnold H Hord states that the lineage of the Hord family of England has been traced back to Richard Hord of Shropshire 1275 A.D. And in 1553, Alan Hord, a member of this Shropshire family purchased the Manor of Cote, Oxfordshire. Other members of this family moved to London, to Ewell in Surrey and to the southern and southwestern counties of England. He states that May 22, 1650 Aalan Hoord came to Virginia, also Elias Hoard May 27, 1654 and that all people with the Hord surname in America are descended form this family, who has the right to bear a Coat of Arms
I find it quite amusing when you see other people's web sites concerning the Hord family, with the Coat of Arms in a prominent position, and they have copied word for word from these publications.
Unfortunately some of his work does seem to be flawed.
Other yDNA matches with the HORD/HORE surname are MONROE, you can find research for the Monroe research
Since having a yDNA match with some descendents of John Hord we have been looking very closely to see if we can find the answer to this. My Hore family can be traced back to the early 1500's in villages to the north of Gloucester City. These villages were Charlton Kings, Leckhampton, Down Hatherley and Deerhurst. Although there are records earlier in 1327 of Hugh le Hore paying 9d in tax at Charlton Kings.
The Hore/le Hore/Hoore/Hoare/Hoar/Whore surname has never been spelt Hord.
Also you would expect a family who had a Coat of Arms to be quite well educated and usually had an Armorial Seal to sign their documents with. In the 1708 deed of William Gardner John HORE couldn't sign his name.
So what do we really know about John Hord. In the following early documents he spelt his name HOARE/HORE then for some reason he started using HORD/HOARD

1734 "Shady Grove" is situated near the present border line of the Counties of Caroline and Essex. The house is now situated in Caroline County, but in 1717 that part of Caroline County was within the boundaries of the County of Essex. In an indenture between Thomas Coghill of St. Ann's Parish, Essex County, and Thomas Dickinson of Hanover Parish, King George County (May 20, 1734), the land sold is described as "part of a patent to James Coghill, April 17, 1667, situated on a branch of Portobago Bay, called the deep branch, thence up the sd branch to the line of John HORD" (Deed Book, 1733-34, p. 84, Essex Co.)..

Mr HOARD (Thomas) - this gentleman left the army at the close of the war with the Rank of Captain - he was in BUFORDS defeat - and I have understood that many of the officers should Say had he commanded; the Tables would have been turned on TARLTON - who contrary to all good faith - so soon as the men had laid down there arms on certain stipulated Conditions, he let his horse loose on them; and began his usual masacre - when this gentleman with hia Company alone, flew to there arms - and fought most gallantly - until overpowered, he Taken prissoner, and covered with wounds the marks of which he carries now in his face.
This gentleman lived near me for three years - he is a man of good Sense, very independant in His property, possesses a fine Temper - and I think a respectable man - and altho I cannot Say any thing within my Knowledge, of his millitary Talents - yet certain I am - from his Activity, and Industry - and being well aquainted with Bussiness - that he would be a valluable acquisition in the Staff department - he holds I think the rank of majr in the 80,000 Malitia, that has been drafted as the first requisitiond and he assures me his determination is, to end his days in the Army. if he can get an appointment - and to render his country every Service in his power.

For the role GW played in the compilation of a list of Virginians who might serve as officers if the Provisional Army authorized by Congress on 2 Mar. 1799 were called into being, see McHENRY to GW, 2 May, n.1. The letter of 2 May to McHenry from Gen. Thomas Posey (1750–1818), who lived in Kentucky but wrote from Fredericksburg, Va., reads:
:“I take the liberty of recommending Majr Thomas HORD of Caroline county to your notice in the appointments to be made for officering the provisional Army. I observe by the papers that the President has thought it necessary to organize the provisional Regiments—Should this be the case you may rely in full confidance with respect to the virtue patriotism and abillities of Majr Thomas HORD. He was a valuable Officer in our late revolution—was very much wounded and cut to pieces in Bufords defeat—is a warm friend to our Genl Government—is a steady Opposer of John TAYLOR to whome he is a neighbour—and is independant in his circumstances. Majr HORD did not solicit me to write to you for an appointment, but from my knowledge of the man I think he will be a great acquisition to the Army agreeable to the rank he may hold. I asked him if he would accept of a commission in the provisional army, he said if his country needed his services—that is if his country was in danger of an insurection or invasion he was ready and willing to serve in the rank of a field officer should the President think proper to confer such an appointment upon. I think his rank at the end of the war was a captain”
Thomas Hord served as an officer in the Virginia forces during the Revolution and had risen to the rank of captain lieutenant in the 6th Virginia Regiment when in May 1780 he was wounded and taken prisoner in Charleston, South Carolina.

1802 James HORD Prince William - Haymarket was the district courthouse for Fairfax, Loudoun, Fauquier, and Prince William Counties. Today it is Saint Paul's Episcopal Church, but it remains obvious that the building, with its three-bay arcade now filled in with pressed brick and its circular fan or window in the gable, was once almost identical to the Faifax Courthouse. Largely for that reason the design is attributed to James WREN. Although builders James WRIGHT and James HORD had completed the Prince William - Haymarket building by September 1802, there was a delay of over a year before the court met there. Was stationed at the Governor's palace. Served 2 mos. on that tour. Enlisted under Serg. Maj. Tho. HORD and marched from Green Spring near Wms-burg, where he enlisted to the South to join Genl. Green, guarding baggage wagons. After staying there some time was ordered back by Gen. Green with same baggage. On this tour he was 5 mos. Cont'd about Wms'burg and did duty until the siege of York where he was present doing duty there for 5 mos., when he was discharged and returned home. Born Spts. Co., 1760. Called into service from Spts. Co. and has always lived in sd. county.
